North Carolina bred Marquis Musiq is breaking down the walls of the box he’s been put in.
Musiq grew up in a little town called Kings Mountain, with his single parent mother. His father was absent. Marquis has always considered his music to be just a part of hip hop. He places himself in the same category with artists like Kendrick Lamar, Jay Z, J. Cole, etc. The only difference he says is that his music has a biblical message behind it while the others don’t.
“I just want music back to serving its original purpose which was to bring praise to our God" Musiq says. "At the same time, I want to show people that I relate to them in everyday struggles they face. I’ve been through some of the same struggles they face."
Marquis Musiq just released his first official mixtape as a free download on his website www.turnupthemusiq.com.
When Musiq was asked what his musical background was he answered with, “I’ve loved music since birth. My mom was a huge r&b fan in the 90s so we would find ourselves riding down the road blasting songs by artists like Boyz II Men, Dru Hill, etc. So I grew up heavily influenced by the music of the 90s. I also played the piano so classical music played a little bit of a role in my musical background.”
